2008 Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

As with every Aprilia product, the SL 750 Shiver has a highly innovative design where form and function come together to create an almost perfect object. The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver is pure technology and this is evident in its sharp, sporty lines.

The frame and engine are the foundations of the design and are also, rightly, the main elements characterising the look of the SL 750 Shiver. Each element has been designed to be beautiful and functional. The design is refined and clean-cut for the maximum possible functionality. The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver exhaust is also a very distinctive design element. On the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver, this technical component becomes a design element at the same time, creating a bike both aggressive and at the same time elegant.

The tank-seat-tail assembly further emphasises the compactness of the bike. The rider becomes one with the machine, perfectly integrated in the short, agile, slim design. This establishes an immediate feeling between the rider and the bike, making the rider feel as if they have always been riding it. The strongly tapering tail also incorporates the twin exhaust with triangular silencers, a feature which makes the design even more aggressive, while keeping weight distribution balanced and highly symmetrical.

The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver is compact, functional and attractive. The adoption of a side mounted shock absorber not only adds a further distinctive feature, but also enables the length of the bike to be as compact as possible for an agile and exciting ride.

The VTwin 90 degree engine inherits all of Aprilia’s experience in high performance mechanics. Endless hours of bench and road tests have produced a genuine masterpiece of mechanical engineering capable not just of exciting high performance, but also complete reliability. Thanks to its particular technical characteristics, the Aprilia V90 combines high power with maximum usability and easy riding.

A generous heart, destined to set new performance and technology standards for the class, the engine has been designed by the Aprilia Research and Development department which set out to create a new powerful and reliable engine.

The quest for performance at the top of its class led to the adoption of a number of advanced and innovative technical features:

• 90° V engine layout

• Ride by Wire technology

• Highly over-square bore and stroke ratio

• Four valves per cylinder

• Double overhead camshaft with mixed chain and gear drive

• Electronic fuel injection with two throttle bodies

• Plug caps with integrated stick-coils

• Three way catalytic converter and Lambda probe oxygen sensor

• Hydraulically operated clutch

For this type of bike, the 90° V arrangement of the cylinders was found to be the best solution in terms of both performance and size. With strong top end power and consistently generous torque available across a wide rev range and with negligible vibrations, the Aprilia V2 750 is at the top of its class.

The engine timing also deserves a special mention. Motion is transmitted to the four valves per cylinder and double camshaft by a mixed gear/chain system. This technical application, already adopted by Aprilia in the V60 engine mounted on the RSV 1000 R, enables the size of the engine to be kept to a minimum, while guaranteeing more precise and reliable timing. The timing chain is also shorter for less overall stress and a longer working life.

The latest generation injection system uses fine atomising injectors which, together with the ignition with two spark plugs per cylinder, ensures optimum combustion for an engine which is not just more powerful, but also cleaner.

The sophisticated electronic management makes the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver engine a new benchmark for naked street bikes. In the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver, Ride by Wire technology becomes part of the standard equipment of a bike in this class for the first time in the history of motorcycling. The electronic throttle management system optimises the opening of the throttle bodies according to numerous parameters, including engine speed, gear selected and position of the throttle. The engine is therefore always able to offer optimum acceleration performance and the lowest possible fuel consumption for a still more fluid and environmentally sensitive ride. This innovative solution guarantees even fuller and more regular output at low and medium speeds, optimizing the running of the engine.

Thanks to the technology used, the Aprilia V90 manages to deliver exceptionally high power for the engine configuration. 95 HP at 9000 revs and maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7000 revs are outstanding for a twin of this capacity. The high torque available, even at low speeds, makes the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver quite simply in a class of its own.

A latest generation engine management unit controls all engine parameters with all data passing through a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line to the instrument panel, which also acts as a diagnostic terminal. The CAN line uses just two wires to transmit all data. This simplifies the electrical system enormously as well as reducing the total weight of the bike.

The exhaust is made entirely from stainless steel. The manifolds come together under the seat in a single silencer with twin tail pipes whilst the large volume (10 litres) contributes to perfect engine breathing for excellent efficiency.

Experts have always acknowledged that Aprilia bikes have the best chassis in their respective classes. The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver is concrete confirmation that once again Aprilia has managed to create a chassis which is both extremely easy and intuitive to ride and provides incredibly high handling performance. The frame exploits all the knowledge Aprilia has gained in racing and also draws on new studies on mixed structures with the futuristic RXV and SXV, already winners of a number of titles during their debut on the racetrack. The top part of the tubular steel trellis is connected to large side plates by means of special high strength bolts. This creates an extremely rigid and lightweight frame, the best solution to harness all the horsepower of the Aprilia V90.

Creation of an Aprilia bike always involves synergy between chassis and engine. The fundamental design choices for the V90 engine led to construction of a highly rational and efficient frame. And the reduced longitudinal dimensions of the engine made it possible to design a short, agile bike, helped in particular by the side positioning of the shock absorber. Not a simple design whim but a precise technical decision which created valuable space for the exhaust manifolds whose shape and size have been calibrated perfectly to ensure maximum engine efficiency. This enabled the optimum exhaust manifold configuration to be obtained, without adversely affecting the length of the bike and without exposing the shock absorber, a fundamental element for the ride, to beat stress.

The aluminum swing arm with reinforcement truss has been sized specifically to contain the asymmetrical stresses caused by the lateral positioning of the shock absorber. The rigidity of the swingarm sets new standards for the class.

Optimum definition of the suspension is an obsession for Aprilia designers. Even such a “simple” bike as this is it must have the best possible available. The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver therefore stands out from the pack in this important and decisive area as well.

The 43 mm upside down forks with forged lowers to support the radially mounted calipers provide benchmark smoothness. The 120 mm wheel travel they provide makes the bike equally at home commuting or on your favorite back road. The bottom steering yoke is made from forged aluminum, the top steering yoke from forged anodized aluminum to provide a perfect set up and steering angle.

The side shock absorber rests directly on the swingarm, according to the cantilever principle, and provides adjustments for spring preload and hydraulic rebound. Rear wheel travel is 130 mm.

The best technology currently available is incorporated in the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver, the first naked bike in its class with a radially mounted calliper system. A feature emphasising even further (as if it were needed) the sporty personality and sports bias of the design. The 320 mm front discs are the same as used in our racing flagships, the RSV 1000 R and Tuono 1000 R.

At the back, a 245 mm disc with single piston caliper provides ample support for the front circuit.

The front and rear braking circuits both use aeronautical style metal braided brake hoses to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines, guaranteeing maximum braking precision for this top level system.

– The Matrix instrument panel: the combined digital and analog instrument panel receives all the data over a CAN line and acts as an integral part of the self-diagnostics system as it also features a memory. The design is extremely modern, compact and lightweight. All functions can be switched by means of the handlebar control. The LED backlighting can be adjusted to three levels: white in the analogue zone and red in the digital zone.

– The biconical aluminium handlebars are a direct reference to the handlebars of the Tuono, Aprilia’s flagship street bike. Maximum lightness and maximum control. A top quality component no other bike in its class can boast.

– The double parabola front light has complex surfaces and a double parking light for the perfect lighting set up when riding at night.

– The advanced hydraulically operated clutch ensures constantly precise action and amazingly smooth engagement, and offers all the convenience of self-adjustment for maintenance free use.

2008 Aprilia Tuono 1000 R

March 20, 2008 Leave a comment

Aprilia Tuono 1000 R

2008 Aprilia Tuono 1000 R

Ever since it first appeared on the motorcycling scene, the Tuono has embodied Aprilia’s genius and amazing technical know-how, accumulated through victory after victory in motorcycle racing. The Tuono has come to mean flair and technology more than any other road-going motorcycle.

The fact is that the Tuono is simply unique. Not just another naked, the Tuono is a 1000 cc superbike. Only the fairing has been removed, and the handlebars raised for maximum control. The Tuono has exceeded all expectations. It has proved unbeatable as a road bike, and the Factory version has been invincible on the racetrack, literally dominating the Italian naked racing scene. Not satisfied with success at home, the Tuono has also carried the Aprilia flag on the international racing scene, achieving prestige in epic races like the Isle of Mann Tourist Trophy, to name just one event in which the Tuono has fearlessly taken on production bikes and competition superbikes too. The Tuono is a street fighter with racing in the blood.

The new Tuono 1000 R is refined, powerful, and precise. It holds all the records for this class of motorcycle, and is the unquestioned leader on the twin cylinder scene. To put it simply, the Tuono 1000 R is the bike that all other nakeds have to beat. It is a machine for the demanding motorcyclist, the rider who seeks maximum performance from a naked, on the road and on the track.

The latest Tuono 1000 R has the same amazing character as the previous model, with improved technical specifications and performance. The 2007 model is more advanced than ever, thanks to the Evolution engine that has already made its debut on the superb Factory version.

The fastest naked around is now more powerful than ever! With performance beyond the reach of the competition, the Tuono 1000 R is the best naked money can buy, with all the performance of a racing superbike to thrill even the most sophisticated racetrack riders.

The new 139 HP engine not only gives you more power to play with, but makes the bike more usable on the road too. Just like the RSV from which it derives, the Tuono 1000 R embodies the concept of “total ridability” that has always characterised Aprilia’s performance motorcycles.
Manically precise ergonomics combine with amazingly easy control to let you establish a perfect feeling with the bike the moment you ride off, and to help you maximise your own potential with the minimum physical and mental effort.

The improvements that Aprilia’s engineers have made will ensure that the Tuono 1000 R continues to set the pace for high performance nakeds.

Let’s look at some of the main changes.

· New V 60 Magnesium Evolution engine

· Dynamic air intake (the only naked with ram air technology)

· Electronic fuel injection system with 57 mm throttle bodies

· 16 bit engine management unit

· Exhaust system with twin silencers and three way catalytic converter with Lambda probe oxygen sensor

· Aluminium alloy perimeter frame

· Double banana aluminium swingarm

· Lighter steering yoke

Once again Aprilia has succeeded in producing an exclusive, refined and unique naked. The latest Tuono 1000 R remains the most sought after of all naked twins, and the perfect synthesis of exclusive components, quality, technology and finish.

Like the RSV, the Tuono has been perfected on the track to satisfy the most demanding and refined motorcyclists. Each individual part has been developed to maximise the performance and riding pleasure of a naked that is already a legend in racing circles.

Engine performance is better than ever. Maximum power is 102 kW (139 HP) at the crank and maximum torque 10.9 kgm at only 8,500 rpm. The Aprilia Tuono 1000 R is therefore among the most powerful of all nakeds.

The bike’s styling is unmistakably Aprilia, and unmistakably Tuono. The Tuono 1000 R maintains a close family look with the previous model and the RSV 1000 R from which it derives. The new, aggressive nose fairing, with closely mounted twin headlights, has been developed in wind tunnel testing to provide effective protection for the rider and to kill lift at high speeds, ensuring maximum precision and control.

The Tuono 1000 R has been designed with performance and comfort in mind. All parts are styled for stunning looks and maximum functionality. The two lateral spoilers, for example, not only look great but also serve an important aerodynamic purpose. They help keep the bike stable at high speed and keep the wind off the rider’s legs. It is partly thanks to these spoilers that the Tuono 1000 R provides better aerodynamic protection than any other naked.

The design team has also gone to great lengths to ensure that, unlike other nakeds, the Tuono 1000 R benefits from race-tuned engine breathing. The Tuono 1000 R is the only naked with a dynamic air intake located directly under the nose fairing, and a duct to channel ram air through the frame to the airbox. Yet more proof of the Tuono 1000 R’s uncompromising racing soul!

On the Tuono 1000 R, ergonomics is one of the bike’s strong points. The seating position has been carefully designed to give the rider maximum control over the front end. The handlebar risers are lower and the footrests have been moved further back, so that the riding position is sportier and more effective. Despite this, overall comfort has even improved, so that riding is less tiring.

The sleek tail with its integrated direction indicators is similar to that of the RSV but points upwards to enhance the Tuono 1000 R’s dynamic styling. The bike can also be rapidly transformed from single to dual seat, adding a passenger seat with built-in grab handles for a comfortable and safe grip.

The V60 Magnesium Evolution engine

The latest 1000 cc V 60 Magnesium Evolution engine is derived from that of the 2006 RSV 1000 R Factory, with only a few minor changes to improve torque and muscle at low revs. The engine has been thoroughly redesigned to maintain its reputation as the best twin cylinder engine in production. So performance is more amazing than ever, with 100% usable power and, of course, that proverbial Aprilia reliability.

Engine breathing has been improved by new, bigger exhaust valves (enlarged from 31 to 33 mm in diameter) and new, larger diameter exhaust header pipes. Thanks to these improvements, the V60 Magnesium Evolution that drives the Tuono 1000 R puts out more power than ever, 139 HP at 9,500 rpm, while also boosting torque to an impressive 10.9 Kgm at 8,500 rpm, a figure that tells you all you need to know about the muscle that Aprilia’s V twin can deliver even at low revs.

The new silencers have catalytic converters installed nearer to the collector pipes. This solution has reduced converter activation time by 50% while further reducing the level of exhaust emissions, keeping tem well within the strict limits required for Euro 3 homologation.

Optimised fluid dynamics inside the cylinder heads have been enhanced by improved mapping of the combined ignition and fuel injection systems to achieve higher power throughout the useful rev range.

So let’s have a look at the main characteristics of the new V 60 Magnesium Evolution engine:

· New optimised cylinder heads with bigger valves and one spark plug per cylinder

· 57 mm throttle bodies with one injector per cylinder

· High strength conrods

· Lighter overall weight thanks to the extensive use of magnesium

· Close-ratio gearbox

· Dry sump lubrication with a double trochoid pump, separate oil tank and oil cooler

· Mixed gear and chain valve timing. The drive gears (one for each timing chain) are located inside the crankcase to keep the cylinder heads as compact as possible.

· AVDC (Anti Vibration Double Countershaft).

· Aprilia’s patented PPC (Pneumatic Power Clutch) hydraulically operated, power assisted clutch system for controlling rear wheel bounce under deceleration
The Tuono 1000 R inherits the RSV’s dynamic air intake, locating it just under the headlight cluster, in the centre of the bike where ram air pressure is highest. The Air Runner duct (which also supports the nose fairing and instruments) channels the air to a 10.3 litre airbox, designed to allow the engine to develop its full potential. The Air Runner duct ensures that pressure in the airbox increases with speed, and generates a 3% increase in engine power at maximum speed.

An engine control unit developed in conjunction with Siemens VDO provides integrated engine management. The ECU receives all essential engine parameters in real time from 15 different sensors, processes the data and, again in real time, controls the various actuators that keep the engine functioning perfectly at all times.

The unit’s flash EPROM comes with the mapping for unrestricted racing exhausts ready loaded. Aprilia’s Technical Assistance Service can therefore enable race mapping in next to no time on request.

Whether you are riding on the road or on the track, the Tuono 1000 R’s chassis brings you the tops in performance and control. Every aspect of the frame, fork and suspensions has been fine tuned for perfect weight distribution. In keeping with Aprilia traditions, the frame is a combination of aluminium-silicon alloy castings and Peraluman 450 pressed parts. This highly sophisticated structure is not only more rigid than the previous version but lighter too. The latest frame weighs under 10 kg (9650 grams) setting an impressive new record for its class. The wheelbase is shorter too, and at 1410 mm – another record for the category – accounts for the Tuono 1000 R’s crisper than even handling and more instinctive ride. The new double banana swingarm provides a clear passage for the exhaust system and weighs only 4860 grams, well under the 5 kg figure considered by experts to be the reference weight for this component.

The fork is a Showa upside down unit, with 43 mm stanchions for a perfect balance between precision on the racetrack and comfort on the road. And to ensure that the ideal setup can be achieved for all styles and conditions, on the road and on the track alike, the fork is fully adjustable in spring preload and in compression and rebound damping.
The Sachs monoshock at the rear is likewise adjustable in spring preload and rebound damping.

The braking system has undergone a number of major changes. The new Tuono 1000 R is equipped with Brembo Gold radial calipers featuring two separate sintered pads. The use of four pads instead of two doubles the number of leading edges in the pad-disc system, and delivers increased braking force for identical effort at the brake lever. Because the pads are smaller in size, wear is also more evenly distributed.

The two 320 mm floating steel discs feature a narrower braking band to minimise inertia and weight and are fixed in place by Aprilia’s exclusive six spoke flange.

The rear braking system is Brembo Gold too, with a 220 mm stainless steel disc and a caliper with two 32 mm pistons.

The front and rear brakes both use aeronautical metal braided hoses to eliminate the sponginess inevitably associated with conventional brake hoses and to ensure maximum braking precision.

What makes the Aprilia Tuono 1000 R stand out from the competition is the tremendous care and attention that Aprilia has paid to every little detail. The design team have done their very best to ensure that every component on the bike improves its performance and functionality, reduces its weight and enhances its quality and finish.

The following components deserve special mention.

– The dashboard is a mixed (digital-analog) unit. It uses the data received over the CAN line to perform an essential autodiagnostic function for which it incorporates a dedicated memory. The new dashboard control unit performs the same functions as the previous unit (including the 40 lap timer) but is more compact and modern in design and extremely lightweight. User friendliness has improved too, with all functions controlled from two practical push-buttons on the left hand light switch.

The LED backlighting can also be adjusted to three levels of intensity.

· The headlight cluster is derived from that of the RSV, and incorporates four light units for perfect night-time visibility.

· The new tail light cluster features the innovative design and LED lighting of the RSV.

· The ignition key is internally coded, and the ignition block is fitted with an engine immobiliser as standard.

Aprilia performance now comes with added security.

Constant endurance testing in the development phase has allowed us to create a completely reliable motorcycle in all aspects.

The exhaust system now has external catalytic converters that are installed nearer the collector pipes to cut activation time. The Factory is homologated to Euro 3 standards as a result, meaning lower emissions than ever before.

The Factory has the same super-light frame as the RSV 1000 R. Only the gold finish is different, giving the bike a more aggressive look. The swingarm is the same too, but is polished instead of painted for greater wear resistance.

The 43 mm upside-down Öhlins Racing fork is titanium nitride (TiN) coated for maximum smoothness. Its advanced design with longer sleeves and shorter fork bottoms reduces load at two critical points, the slide bush and the stanchion to fork bottom joint. Wheel travel is 120 mm. Like all top racing forks, the Öhlins allows precision adjustment of compression and rebound damping as well as spring preload.

The fork has new, forged aluminium mounting blocks to enable radial calipers to be fitted.

An Öhlins Racing rear monoshock is fitted as standard. The unit incorporates a separate piggy back nitrogen cylinder and provides adjustments for spring preload, compression and rebound. A characteristic unique to Aprilia is that the length of the monoshock can be adjusted directly from the unit itself to vary the height of the bike’s rear end. Perfect suspension setup can therefore be achieved for all riding styles and all track characteristics

The world’s top twin cylinder supersport demands top quality brakes. The RSV 1000 R Factory is at the cutting edge of technology, and is equipped with Triple Bridge, radial caliper front brakes developed by Aprilia in conjunction with Brembo.

The rear brakes are Brembo too, and have a 220 mm stainless steel disc and a caliper with two 32 mm pistons.

The front and rear braking circuits both use aeronautical metal braid hoses to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines, guaranteeing maximum braking precision.

What places the Aprilia RSV 1000 R Factory in a class of its own is the care taken in its design and manufacture and the attention paid to every single component on the bike. The result is increased performance, better feel and greater rideability, with reduced weight and a quality and finish that no other bike can equal.

An exclusive two chamber steering damper from Öhlins Racing’s competition range is fitted as standard. The damper is adjustable to adapt steering response to all possible riding conditions.

Extensive use of carbon fibre components makes the bike far lighter as well as more refined. The mudguards and various fairing parts are made of extremely light woven black carbon fibre.
The RSV 1000 R Factory also features a steering pin in aluminium instead of steel to help reduce weight.

The exclusively designed forged wheels deserve special mention. Made by OZ Racing, these wheels are one of the most distinctive features of the bike, not just in appearance, but in technical specifications too.

They are forged in Anticorodal 6061 aluminium using an 8,000 ton hydraulic press.
This manufacturing technique produces wheels that are totally free from the defects and porosity that can always occur in conventional casting processes, and gives exceptional mechanical characteristics.

Finite element analysis was used to identify the best possible wheel design. The result is a six spoke front wheel and a five spoke back wheel with ‘Y’ profile spokes forking at the rim to provide two anchor points each.

This spoke design is not just a question of looks. It gives excellent lateral and torsional rigidity and thus helps maintain perfect wheel to suspension alignment. On the RSV 1000 R Factory everything has been designed for performance and beauty.

The saving in weight is also exceptional. Each wheel weighs about 25% less than the lightest available wheels made using conventional aluminium casting techniques. Inertia is therefore 25% lower than with cast aluminium alloy wheels. The wheels are also anodised instead of painted. This has further reduced weight and ensures that these essential components keep their characteristic finish for the entire life of the bike. Even the manufacturing specifications have been recessed into the wheel instead of embossed on it, for a final touch of class. Added together, all these tiny savings mean that the RSV 1000 R Factory achieves an amazing dry weight of only 185 kg.
